Simple message today brought on by one of my friends and runners I coach in Maine, Seth Hasty…Love The Sport. Ten days before the race, Seth asked to run a half-marathon after a slight PR about three weeks before. It was a hometown race and he felt he could place high while running in front of his family and friends. I immediately agreed and thought it was a good idea, why not run a relaxed race and have fun!
Fast forward to Sunday: that’s Seth at mile 13 running the last 0.1 after grabbing the stroller to push his young son Abe across the finish. What was Seth’s time? His previous PR was 1:21:22 and on Sunday he crossed with his son Abe almost two minutes faster in 1:19:30 for 3rd place. Seth wasn’t physiologically prepared to run two minutes faster on Sunday than a few weeks before, but he was mentally and emotionally READY and RELAXED. Being relaxed and loving the sport will take you to new PRs – Seth has certainly proven this! Congrats Seth!
